Which Guns Work Best in a Zombie Apocalypse?
Being presented with having to survive a barren version of our world today, with most of the population dead, food and water supplies scarce, and having to deal with the threat of being killed by zombies, seems pretty far-fetched to most Americans. However, if you remove the zombies from the equation, the rest of it is definitely a possibility in a land that was impacted by severe disasters. If you throw in a nuclear winter, a massive volcanic eruption in Yellow Stone Park, an outbreak of a world-ending virus, or a biological attack from terrorists, you could potentially find yourself in a situation where there are massive casualties of Americans, our infrastructure is impacted at a devastating level, and our ability to access food and water could be severely limited or destroyed altogether. In these situations, while there may or may not be zombies, you can guarantee that hostile persons may be looking to steal your family's food, water, or even lives.
Step 1: Decide to prepare yourself for all disasters
How do you ensure that you are able to be ready for these situations? Well, if you do nothing - you are guaranteed to be an easy target for people to take everything from you. You are also more likely to run out of food and water for your family, and having to face the possibility of starvation or dehydration. Disaster preparedness is something that Americans have truly become complacent with, being at their lowest levels since the end of the Cold War. You cannot survive if the water stops running to your home, the gas runs out at the gas stations, natural gas stops flowing to your home, electrical grids stop functioning, and the food runs out at your local grocery stores, if you do nothing to prepare for those situations.
Just like you have to prepare and plan for an evacuation plan for a fire in your home, an action plan for power outages for your home, or a shelter plan for a tornado approaching your home, you have to have to be prepared and have a plan for other disasters - both natural and manmade. This preparedness starts with a plan of action, expands into short-term immediate and essential supplies, and then grows into long-term plan and extended supplies, and a possible relocation plan, should the region become too unsafe or if the disaster is not mitigated by your local or federal government in a timely manner.
Step 2: Build short-term and long-term action plans
Start with a plan of what you need to do within the first day of the disaster, and continue into the first week. Ensure that you have food and water set aside for your family to consume during that week. Be prepared to be without running water, electricity, and natural gas. Have a means of communication in case phone lines are down so that you can send and receive information regarding emergency broadcasts and hopefully communicate with friends and family to keep them appraised of your situation and status. You definitely want to monitor emergency broadcasts that may notify you whether emergency services are available, or if your area is being evacuated. In the case of evacuation, you definitely want to have a mobility plan to get your family to short, medium, and long travel distances, with enough resources to allow your family to travel and survive once you arrive at your destination.
Step 3: Have necessary supplies for each disaster plan
You start with a list of supplies that are essential for your family to last the first week of the disaster. If it is a short-term disaster, there is definitely a chance that the government is able to recover and restore services. However, you also have to have a long-term list of supplies that your family will need to survive, both in-place and if relocation is necessary. Even if there is no immediate threat in your area, it may be in your best interests to relocate to a family or friend's location because of their having better access to natural resources or if you have a family plan involving everyone moving to a specific location in order to consolidate resources and to share the workload of surviving and protecting your family and supplies.
Do your research and work together with friends and family to ensure that your list is accurate and that your estimated amounts of supplies are sufficient. Also, keep the existence of your supplies and your action plans as secret as possible. Only communicate them to persons who are a part of your plan, and ensure that they know the importance of keeping the existence of these supplies and the contents of these plans secret. It only takes one person to know about your plans or resources, who is in a dire situation because of their lack of planning, to place you and your family at risk. Once you have your list of supplies, start buying them over time so that you don't spend a lot of money all at once. During WWII and the Cold War, families slowly bought canned goods and other items to prepare for the possibility of disasters stemming from those wars. Do what you can afford, and then store those supplies properly to ensure that they are ready and available when needed.
Step 4: Arm yourself to protect your family and supplies
It is almost guaranteed that at some point in the disaster, you and your family will be presented with a situation where other people will try to steal from you. Starvation and desperation will cause people to do crazy things - hence you may be dealing with zombies after all. If you have one or more persons who come across your family, who has plenty of food, water, and other supplies, their desperation may lead them to decide to harm you and your family in order to steal these supplies from you. Some people will be polite and ask. However, others will simply try to assault or kill in order to take what is yours. Criminals will still exist during these emergencies, and they will do anything to get what they want, but even your average and unprepared persons will do desperate things when faced with death by starvation or dehydration. Arm yourselves, and train each member of your family to use each firearm or weapon as needed. You cannot rely on only one member of the family to be trained, because that person may become incapacitated or killed during an altercation, and your family's survival may depend upon the others defending themselves.
Viking Biometric Security Gun Safe
Keeping your guns rapidly accessible, but safe from theft or access by a minor, is properly achieved with this Viking biometric security gun safe. I have opened and accessed firearms from this safe hundreds of times, also using it to keep other important items in a safe place, and haven't had to replace the batteries in years! Place a motion sensor from Iris on the safe door, and you'll know when it's opened - giving you full control and monitoring as to who and when your safe gets accessed.
1. Windham Weaponry's new RMCS-3 AR-15 - Silenced, Scoped
I chose the Windham Weaponry's RMCS-3 AR-15 platform as the primary weapon of choice, as it is the most versatile platform to date. I can add a silencer so that I can hunt and engage enemies without giving away my position. I can add an ACOG + Red Dot hybrid scope to hunt and engage enemies at mid to long range distances, and can also add a slanted iron sites on the platform so that I can engage close range targets. I can carry a lot of 5.56 ammunition, which has excellent ballistics regarding effective range, velocity, and penetration. I can also rapidly convert my 5.56mm weapon platform over to a 7.62mm platform within seconds, allowing me to increase my maximum effective range, increase stopping power, and achieve superior penetration of my weapon platform. The 5.56mm round is perfect for hunting small and medium game and can be used to engage persons trying to attack you and your family. The 7.62mm round can engage medium to large game, and can engage persons with body armor, vehicles, or persons within vehicles. Throw in the .300 Blackout round configuration as a bonus, and you have a highly superior hunting and enemy engagement weapons platform.

2. DP-12 Shotgun
One of the most innovative shotgun designs to date, the DP-12 allows you to rapidly fire 16 rounds down range towards your target(s). The best design of a double-barreled 12 gauge pump-action shotgun ever presented, allows you to custom load this monster for the appropriate shotgun ammo for any given situation. Each barrel has its own ammo tube, and each tube holds 7 rounds, allowing you a 16-round capacity with two rounds in the chamber and 14 rounds in the magazines. Both barrels are fired at once with a single trigger squeeze, allowing twice the devastation of a normal pump-action shotgun with each firing. With top, side, and bottom Picatinny rail system options, it allows you to customize the tactical configuration to your liking. Add light, laser, sights, and fore-grip as needed to make this gun to fit your needs, and it offers ambidextrous safety and pump slide release, allowing it to be used by anyone in your family. If you have to pull this out on someone to defend your family, I guarantee that they will regret ever making you have to do so!
3. Kel-Tec KSG-25 Shotgun
Yes, there are two shotguns at the top of this top ten list! The Key-Tec KSG-25 shotgun offers us a greater round capacity, with a 20 12-guage shell capacity within its extended dual-tube magazines plus one in the chamber, with 20 + 1 shells. With the ability for each KSG-25 in your arsenal to be custom configured with various projectiles, it becomes a very valuable hunting and tactical weapon platform. With top and bottom Picatinny tactical rail systems, you can again configure the weapon for whatever tactical features that your prefer. With a 38" overall length, it has a shorter length than other shotguns, but offers more than twice the ammunition capacity. The KSG platform also includes a patented downward ejection system, which allows for ambidextrous use and doesn't shoot expended shells towards the person to your left or right. Whether you are hunting deer, or fending off a multitude of zombies, you will find that this weapon system is a gift that just keeps on giving.
4. Kriss Vector Assault Rifle
When a family is protecting its home, property, or itself when mobile from one place to another, you need a versatility in weapons platforms. The Kriss Vector is one of the most accurate sub-machine gun weapons platforms I've ever seen, and it is a fully automatic weapon system that fires .45 ACP! If you've ever seen or shot the Thompson sub-machine gun, you know just how difficult it was to control a fully automatic weapon system firing .45 ACP. This platform, due to its patented Super-V Recoil Mitigation System, the force of the bolt's action and the explosion from the firing of the round no long drives the barrel up. The motion of the bolt instead is pushed downward towards the grip, allowing someone with a strong firing stance to fire the entire magazine, fully automatic, and place all of the rounds in the tightest pattern they've ever placed on any other fully automatic platform at that speed. With such tight shot placement of that many .45 caliber rounds, in such a short amount of time, the Kriss Vector delivers enough highly lethal energy and mass to knock multiple large male zombies (even if they're wearing body armor) into next week. The weapon system was demonstrated on Future Weapons on The Discovery Channel, proving to be effective at close and medium ranges, both at soft targets and obstructed targets within a vehicle. Even if you have the semi-automatic model of the Kriss Vector in your arsenal, you're truly looking at a highly capable defensive weapon to keep zombies at bay while rounds are being reloaded for those carrying the above mentioned shotguns.

5. Kimber Custom TLE II (EM) - .45 Caliber 1911
The 1911 is a firearm that will always remain to be a favorite amongst gun owners all over America. The Kimber Custom TLE II (EM) is one of the best 1911's that you will find on the market, and consistently performs without failure from some of the toughest firearm critics in the country - American Law Enforcement Officers. It is a highly effective pistol, with a perfect balance of lethality and safety features, ensuring that it will only fire when you intend to fire it. It is the perfect sidearm to have at your disposal in any situation, allowing you to engage zombies of any size and even provides stopping and knock-down power for zombies wearing body armor. Having the Kimber Custom TLE II, attached via a hip or thigh holster, will allow you to draw this weapon and place rounds down range rapidly as your transition to it from your primary weapon system. The Kimber Custom TLE II was designed for law enforcement use, has a lot of features that law enforcement rely on when choosing a platform to keep their officers safe and alive. It has Tritium Night Sights, a three-hold match grade trigger, G-10 grips, 30 lit front strap checkering, and an extended magwell.
6. Ruger GP100 .357 Revolver
The .357 Magnum round has the longest lasting and standing reputation as a one round man stopper/killer. One of the highest speeds for a round of its size, the amount of force that the .357 Magnum round delivers upon impact leaves any sized person utterly devastated. The classic double-action revolver doesn't jam and is easy for anyone to learn to use. The GP100's weight and six-inch barrel, makes it one of the best firing revolvers of the .357 round in existence, and greatly minimizes recoil for any size of shooter. Another good sidearm secondary to draw from a thigh holster, the sound of it firing alone is enough to make any zombies to think twice before trying to harm anyone, or further engage anyone, in your family.
7. FN M249S - Civilian Version of SAW
Yes, there is now a civilian version of the M249 Squad Assault Weapon, otherwise known as the SAW. Many of us military service members have trained on, shot, and spent a multitude of hours cleaning this weapon system. They can all verify for you the effectiveness of this platform to pin down enemy aggressors down range and to provide your team with adequate cover while they shoot, move, and communicate. The civilian version of this weapon system is only semi-automatic, requiring a trigger squeeze for each round to be fired. However, proper training with this platform enables you to accurately place rapid fire of 5.56 ammunition down range, engaging multiple targets, and allowing your family proper covering fire while they seek cover, engage, or relocate to better positioning. You can utilize 100 round belts, or 30 round magazines with this weapon system. I suggest carrying multiple belt drums, along with several backup 30 round magazines, if you're mobile. Otherwise, have a secure emplacement where this weapon system can provide adequate protective fire for the primary way in and out of your secured area. The price tag is high on this system, and it requires a strong person to carry for long distances, so be sure that everyone in your group is adequately trained on how to carry and use it.
8. TAC-II .338 Lapua Mag
The TAC-II 338 is one of the most accurate sniper rifles to date. It utilizes the .338 Lapua Mag cartridge, which has amazing stopping power and superior ballistics to other high caliber rifles. It was utilized by Chris Kyle, for his 2,100 yard kill in the Iraq War and, and Corporal of Horse Craig Harrison, with a 2,707 yard kill in Afghanistan, thus being highly present in regards to longest records for sniper kills by special operations forces around the world. The patented carbon fiber wrapped match grade barrel, custom carbon fiber stock, recoil lug, 20 MOA rail, Timney trigger, Pachmayr recoil pad, and their 1/2 MOA accuracy guarantee, you are getting one of the most accurate shooting systems on the plant, weighing a fraction of other platforms, which has a proven durability. Whether you are using it to hunt large game, or using it to fend off zombies that are wandering into your safety perimeter around your secured location, you won't find a better tool to engage targets from a safe distance. The .338 Lapua round itself shoots farther and flatter than a .50 caliber round, weighs less, costs less, and will do just about as much damage to your target. With the weapon weighing around 5 lbs less than most other .338 platforms, a muzzle break is an absolute must in order to keep from shooting the rifle being extremely painful.
9. Barrett Model 82A1 .50 Caliber Rifle
If you haven't heard of the Barrett Model 82A .50 caliber rifle, you've probably been hiding under a rock somewhere. It has made appearances in numerous movies, and has become a proven weapon system to members of the United States Military. The weapon was designed as a high caliber special utilization sniper rifle. This means that it was designed to penetrate armored vehicles, walls, and body armor, and to disable vehicles. It isn't the most accurate rounds when it comes to long range sniping but, no matter what range it's being used at, you can guarantee that anything that gets hit by the .50 caliber round will be devastated. The weapons is pricey, but come with M1913 steel optics rail, 10 round magazine, dual barrel springs, a lightweight quick detachable bipod, 20" or 29" fluted barrel, fully chromed chamber and bore, high efficiency muzzle break, upper conversion kit for the .416 Barret round, and a custom fit Pelican hard case. The rounds are pricey as well, but you'll have to spring for a decent number of rounds initially to train multiple people on the weapon system.
10. High-Point Carbine 9mm Semiautomatic Rifle
Well, you finally find a 9mm weapon system on the list! With it being one of the cheapest and most common rounds in America, you want a platform that can shoot the round, but you also want the best platform to put those rounds on target. So, we are not talking about a 9mm pistol. The High-Point 9mm carbine rifle is definitely the best way for you put lots of rounds down range, and to put them in the tightest grouping you've ever seen on a 9mm platform. It utilizes a classic vertical grip magazine well, with a 10 round capacity. However, you can buy their Red Ball 20 round magazines to increase your effective capacity. Tactical rails are abundant, allowing you to buy and configure fore-grip, optics, light, and laser accessories to build the configuration right for you. Without a doubt, this lightweight carbine platform is more affordable than other 9mm carbine or SMG platforms, and provides tighter grouping and more consistent round delivery to your target. Add the additional damage done by hollow-point rounds, plus other high end ammunitions, and it becomes a surgically consistent platform at delivering effective 9mm ammunition into a tight shot grouping at short and medium ranges.
