SkyAboveUs is a site for readers who love the outdoors: hiking, climbing, shooting, fishing, camping, boating, etc. Our articles show people the beauty, freedom, and healing power of the out-of-doors and encourage them to get outside. We’d like to show humans exploring and explaining nature. When you add your own background and experience, whatever it is, you can tell us how nature is productive, entertaining, and pleasing.
If you love the outdoors, and would like to write for us, check out the general standards and the HubPages editorial policy for articles on our Network Sites, and also read the recommendations below.
Here’s What We’d Like to See:
Nature! We love to bring your original pictures into the world of the web. Give someone an armchair ride to a place they haven’t been, even if it’s just your fishing hole, your tackle box, the train tracks along the river, the overgrown county park, or the pond in winter. Pictures of plants, animals, and rocks increase the world’s knowledge: show us bait, worms, bows and arrows, animal tracks, mushrooms, flowers, insects, medicinal weeds, storms about to break, or whatever you find interesting, in its place in nature. For example:
- Arizona's Grand Canyon: The Bright Angel Trail with Kids
- Blue Crabs: My Best Crabbing Spots in Florida
Your informed advice about how to act in the wild: It can be helpful, even entertaining, to read how a knowledgeable person has dealt with danger. If you actually know, from experience, of a danger that awaits and how to avoid it, by all means share your experience, as in:
Your DIYs and How-Tos: If you have made something to use in the wild, by all means show us how: take pictures of every important step. If the step-by-step is too complicated to be conveyed easily in photos, consider including YouTube embeds instead. Here are a few great DIYS:
- Building a Cedar-Strip Canoe: The Basics
- How to Easily Flesh a Hide for Tanning
- Basic Saltwater and Sea Fishing Knots for Beginners
Things We Discourage:
Vague warnings: Writing about dangers that you’ve just heard or read about can be overdone. You wouldn’t want your readers to stay inside obsessing about danger.
Tons of gear: Amazon capsules and links should not be the focus of an article: an article should only include a few products you can recommend from personal experience. Readers shouldn’t stay at home obsessing about gear; they should get outside where they belong.
Here are some examples of articles on SkyAboveUs that we would like to showcase. These articles exhibit the type of high-quality work we wish to see on the site:
- Hiking the Adirondack High Peaks: A Hike up Street and Nye
- How to Catch the Big Bass in Farm Ponds
- Great Long-Distance Walks of the World
- Red Drum Fishing Tips & Techniques
- Day Hiking Bright Angel Trail, South Rim, Grand Canyon National Park
A quick note: All of our Network Sites are a blending of professional editing and writers like you.
